You all remember the great and powerful OZ? Do you remember that he was hiding something behind the curtain? Let me just save you the suspense. He was hiding his true identity. We all have a true identity. But where does it come from. And why do we sometimes want to hide it? Better yet when it comes to social dynamics, why is it that most people don’t rely on the words that come out of your mouth? Reason is that, 90% of what you communicate to people has nothing to do with the words that are coming out of your mouth. The majority of your communication is through your body language and vocal tonality. So why do people Trust your body language and vocal tonality over the words that come out of your mouth? The reason is that your body language and vocal tonality reveals to people what you believe. So no matter how convincing you think your words are, if your body language and vocal tonality doesn’t match with the words that are coming out of your mouth, most people will have a hesitancy towards believing you. It’s called in-congruence. What does the Bible say about this?
Genesis 3 New International Version (NIV)
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walkingin the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
As you can see… Adam and Eve physically revealed their lie through their body language. The only way for them to be congruent with their words body language and vocal tonality was to come to terms with the truth. If we want to become better communicators, it is imperative that we seek truth in terms of why we do things. And it is important for us to understand how much are belief systems impact are true intentions, whether we want that conveyed or not. If your sensing in-congruence in your life, ask God to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding on how to get to the bottom of your turmoil. By doing this on a daily basis will drastically improve your communication skills when talking to people.
