Why do we have rules?

So…Why do we have rules! Is it to keep people in line? Does it have to with some level of mistrust? I like posing this question about rules because I believe it is incredibly important and widely misunderstood. Roman’s 7:6 says

Romans 7:6
Verse (Click for Chapter)
New International Version
But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

The law was set up due to lack of relationship. The more relationship you have. The less that rules will apply. So basically rules are a sign of the lack of relationship. Now in a society with a multitude of people you have to have rules and structure because you can’t have relationship with everybody. But as God has drawn near to us. His desire is for us to get to know him on a more intimate level. And that is walking by the spirit being removed from the law and walking in a greater Union with him.
